Program Guidelines
The Chancellor's Distinguished Lectureship Series is intended to enhance the intellectual vitality of LSU and the University's prestige and national visibility. This is the premier lecture series at LSU and the nominated speakers should be eminent leaders in their respective disciplines (for example, members of national academies). The Lectureship offers an excellent opportunity to attract internationally renowned scholars to our campus. Ideally, the distinguished lecturer should appeal to a broad spectrum of the university community. Thus, interdisciplinary nominations are encouraged; this should be reflected in your nomination. We anticipate making two awards annually, one in the arts, humanities, or social sciences and the second in engineering, science, or technology.
Nominations
Nominations will be accepted from any LSU faculty member. Each nomination should be submitted on the one-page nomination form located on the Office of Research and Economic Development's homepage and forwarded to the Todd Pourciau in ORED. A Lectureship selection committee will be convened, consisting of distinguished faculty with varied expertise in the humanities, social, life, and physical sciences, and engineering, to review the nominations and make a recommendation to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development and the Chancellor.
Program Format
Each Distinguished Lecturer will be asked to spend at least two full days on campus. They are expected to give a public lecture understandable to a general audience at which the Chancellor will preside. During their visit, arrangements should be made to speak with faculty and students, lunch with graduate students and perhaps present a smaller, more discipline-specific lecture. The Chancellor will host a reception that will include eminent faculty from disciplines related to the expertise of the distinguished lecturer.
Primary Host
The primary host will be responsible for contacting the invitee once the Chancellor has sent the initial letter of invitation. In addition, the primary host will be involved with the coordination of all aspects of the visit in collaboration with ORED.
Office of Research & Economic Development
ORED will be responsible for coordinating all of the events of the CDLS visit. Working in collaboration with the primary host, ORED will obtain a lecture title, abstract, press kit and photograph of the speaker. In addition, ORED will set the schedule for the speaker to insure interaction with the most appropriate units and people. All expenses related to the visit will be processed by ORED. Questions about appropriate expenditures should be directed to Sharon Bezdek ( sharonb@lsu.edu or 225/578-6910) in ORED.
Public Relations
ORED will collaborate with the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) to publicize the visit in a timely manner to a wide audience. In addition, both parties will disseminate the poster, press release, and invitations to the most appropriate audiences. OPA will prepare a press release to local and national media. A standard-format poster will be created and used for all Lectureship visitors.
