Dr. Charles E. Coates Scholar Research Grants

Summary:  Dr. Charles E. Coates Scholar Research Grants are unrestricted awards made from the Dr. Charles E. Coates Memorial Fund, established in 1964 in memory of the third Ph.D on LSU's faculty. A world-renowned chemist, Dr. Coates had significant impact on American chemistry and chemical engineering education in his 44 years at LSU beginning in I893

These competitive awards are made to support promising doctoral research by superior graduate students in eligible disciplines.

Eligibility: Graduate students in the departments of Chemistry, Physics, or Chemical Engineering who have completed the general examination and secured a major professor.

Award description:  Two 2-year awards will be made annually for $5000/year, with second year funding contingent upon successful progress, documented in an annual report. A maximum of four awards will be active at anyone time. Funds will be placed in restricted accounts;
expenditure categories will follow accepted University regulations. Accounts will be established in the major professor's name, but expenditures must be directly related to the Scholar's proposed and approved research. Annual award amounts may increase, based on future availability of funds.

Application: 

Applications must include the following:

  1. Cover Page.
  2. Proposal describing the anticipated research, 3-5 pages in length, including figures and references.
  3. Support/recommendation letter from the student's major professor.
  4. Applications must be submitted electronically in pdf to graddeanoffice@lsu.edu. Paper materials will not be accepted.

Selection:  Recipients will be selected by a committee composed of the chairs(or designee)of the departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Chemical Engineering and one appointee of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies. Selection criteria will include the
proposal content, major professor's recommendation letter, and grade point average.

Reports:  Second year funding will be contingent upon submission of a satisfactory one page first-year report 30 days before the end of the year, which should describe progress, outcomes and summary of expenditures. The major professor must also sign the report.

A one page final report must be submitted within 30 days of the end of the second year of funding. The report should describe accomplishments, outcomes (publications, presentations), and a summary of expenditures, signed by the major professor. Reports should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of the Graduate School (114 David Boyd Hall), who will administer this grant program.
