Travel Awards

Criteria

This award is available only to PhD students in their final 18 months of Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics and Astronomy study and who have passed their general exams. The award reimburses up to $1000 of travel expenses. The travel must be to a national or international conference at which the student presents the results of his/her doctoral research in the form of a poster or oral presentation. The student must be both an author and presenter of the paper and have the recommendation of his/her thesis advisor and department chair. Expense reimbursement will be governed by LSU travel regulations (car rental is normally not allowed).

Application Instructions

Prior to the trip, the student submits a Coates Travel Award application and a Request for Authorization to Travel (AS 292) form to the chair of the department in which he/she will be receiving the doctoral degree. If approved by the department, the paperwork is forwarded to:

Assistant Dean
LSU Graduate School
114 David Boyd Hall

Once approved by the Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, the Request for Authorization to Travel (AS 292) is returned to the student. Upon return from the trip, the student attaches that form to a completed travel expense voucher, along with relevant receipts. A copy of the meeting's final program agenda listing the dissertation-related talk and the speaker's name must also be included. This paperwork is submitted to the departmental office, which secures the necessary signatures and forwards all paperwork to the LSU Travel Office in Accounting Services. Reimbursement checks are mailed directly to the student.
