Why Now?
In the latter part of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st, discoveries in science have advanced at an almost blinding pace.
For the past decade, the Department of Energy and the National Academy of Sciences have sponsored research identifying five “Grand Challenges” in Basic Science. (See BESAC, and the contributions of the BESAC meeting of July 31-Aug 1st, 2007 for details)
The Office of Research and Economic Development* is contributing to this effort by sponsoring a workshop to explore phenomena identified in these Grand Challenges, specifically those occurring at shorter times (fs) and distances (nm)**, thus elucidating the dynamic and functional behavior of materials (gases and solids) at the atomic scale.
This workshop aims to alert the regional scientific community to the enormous diversity of possible 4th generation light sources and how they can be used to understand the science articulated by the NAS and DOE in their proposed Grand Challenges. An outcome of the workshop would be to suggest a configuration for a “Light Source for the 21st Century.”
* Cosponsored by the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA), the Office of the Vice President for Research,
Florida State University, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, University of Tennessee
** The fs is a unit of time = 10-15 sec. A light beam travels 300 nm in 1 fs.
The nm is a unit of length = 10-9 meters, about 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.
