PARTNERS
OF ALL AGES
Life Course & Aging Center responding
to communities, young and old
Approved
by the Louisiana Board of Regents last spring, the Life Course
& Aging Center is wasting no time reaching out to community
organizations.
Communication
Sciences and Disorders Associate Professor Janna Oetting is focusing
on building partnerships between LSU faculty and community agencies,
thanks to three years of funding from the Louisiana Children's
Trust Fund. Through these partnerships, Oetting and her LSU colleagues
have created a workshop series for parents and teachers in the
Baton Rouge area.
The
pilot workshops focus on increasing caregivers' knowledge about
child development and disorders. This team of researchers and
community service directors are also working to gain federal funding
for the study of the effectiveness of different health communication
and disease prevention methods for families from diverse backgrounds.
Psychology
Professor Katie Cherry is conducting a needs-assessment survey
to determine the status of elderly persons in Louisiana. She has
formed a partnership with ELDER-LA, a nonprofit corporation established
by a consortium of aging service professionals that operate exclusively
for research, education, advocacy, and collaboration on behalf
of senior citizens in Louisiana. Cherry’s hope is to document
and expand existing services. She also serves as director for
the Center.
